Organization’s Description

HYPE Athletics was formed in 2001 as an organization with a mission to provide the youth with outlets and environments free from drugs and violence.  HYPE Athletics Community has two components to the organization; Services that include, athletic training camps, leagues and tournaments in all sports such as basketball, football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, tennis and more.   Our second component being a social driven service offered to the youth and their families with tutoring, mentoring, counseling, substance abuse prevention and education and young professional entrepreneurial and leadership training. A commitment made by our Board of Directors and partners to further invest in our communities with a plan to provide low income families an affordable home through our HYPE Family Assistance Department will be our next attainable goal as a leader in youth and family services in the State of Michigan.   Our collaborative partners, which include the State of Michigan, Wayne County, The Derrick Coleman Foundation, Young Men in Transition, and many school districts and recreation department throughout the county.

What makes our organization unique?  It is our approach to serve all youth equally with passion and respect.  Our method to evaluate our youth participants, which determines the needs of each child, basically allows us to provide accurate services to the thousands of youth we serve yearly.   In addition to this feature, we at HYPE Athletics have the ability to directly and indirectly mentor and guide our youth through the teaching of discipline, determination and hard work with our athletic programs.  This is due to the great staff of college students, athletes, and coaches along with many great high school coaches and players that have dedicated so much time and energy to insure our youth are following the straight path to success.

Ultimately, it is passion that separates our organization from the rest. Our passion to serve guides our future generation of leaders to great success.    As it is stated “you only get out of life what you put in to it”.  This is our belief, our drive, and determination to stay straight in line on our promise; to bring good health, safety, tolerance and the highest of standards to the many communities serviced by HYPE Athletics Community.

Michigan Green Schools – SE MI Tri-County Group

Organization’s History

This program began as a grassroots initiative at Hartland High School in Livingston County in 2005.  This effort resulted in Governor Jennifer Granholm signing Public Act 146 into law in May of 2006.  The Michigan Green Schools Program encourages public and private schools to participate in environmentally friendly and energy savings activities.

To be designated a Michigan Green School, a school must complete ten of twenty energy saving and environmentally friendly points listed in the Michigan Green Schools Act.  Schools wishing to extend their efforts and complete fifteen or twenty points may earn a higher status.  Information about the program including the application and the list of twenty points is available on our websites (by county) at:

Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy

Organization’s Social Mission

The Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy conserves natural land and open space — including forests, wetlands, meadows, agricultural land, and places of scenic beauty — to provide habitat for wildlife and to enrich the lives of people throughout Southeast Michigan.

Description of Organization

Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy (SMLC) was founded in 1988 to protect land in the 7-county southeast Michigan region: Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. To date, SMLC has protected almost 2,500 acres in 5 of the counties. SMLC has two local divisions, Superior Land Conservancy (SLC) and Monroe County Land Conservancy. Both were established to assist SMLC with land protection and community relations in their respective areas.

SMLC’s purpose is to acquire, restore and manage wildlife habitat, farm land and conservation easements in order to foster healthy ecosystems, protect water quality and assure the continuation of productive family farms. To promote appreciation of the natural world; educate the public about land protection options; and engage communities throughout southeast Michigan in land protection and stewardship activities.

SMLC is certified by the IRS as a charitable 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and is also a “qualified conservation organization” eligible to receive tax-deductible conservation easements and land donations. SMLC is licensed to solicit donations by the State of Michigan and undergoes an annual audit. SMLC is governed by a volunteer board of directors which oversees all governance, fiscal and operational activities of the organization and employs 2 full-time and 2 part-time staff.

SMLC’s three main program areas are:  Land Protection, Stewardship, and Outreach and Education.  Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy accomplishes most of our land conservation, community engagement, and public education work through these primary programs.

In addition, SMLC is based at a historic farm in Superior Township.  The Conservancy Farm is unique in that it may have one of the oldest residential building in the county, the original homestead cabin dating from the 1830’s.  It is also home to SMLC’s Community Organic Garden which currently has 43 active gardeners.  Finally, SMLC also has a working relationship with 6 area farmers, promoting organic and locally-grown food.

To improve Southwest Detroit environmentally and economically. We do this primarily through community organizing, advocacy, education and redevelopment efforts.

Description of Organization

SDEV is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves the Southwest Detroit area. SDEV is a coalition of residents, community organizations, agencies, businesses and industry, working together to improve the environment and strengthen the economy of Southwest Detroit by engaging in community organizing, advocacy, education, and redevelopment efforts.

We accomplish our mission by:

  • Collecting and disseminating information on environmental issues affecting Southwest Detroit;
  • Developing an environmentally informed and active citizenry;
  • Serving as a catalyst and resource for initiatives to improve the environment and stimulate environmentally sound economic development;
  • Identifying and expanding common ground for addressing environmental issues through reasoned dialog.

The Community House

Organization’s Social Mission

The Community House (TCH) is a nonprofit that impacts lives through exceptional educational, social and outreach experiences.

History of Organization

In 1923, a small committee of people in the Birmingham area founded The Community House (TCH) in a small frame structure on the corner of Bates and Maple. They planned it to be a non-partisan, non-sectarian, non-exclusive community center where all would be welcome. Ruth Shain was one of seven women who made up the first administrative board. Ruth was very instrumental in putting together a constitution, bylaws and house rules. In the beginning she served as vice chairman, but soon became president leading The House beyond its early stages. Later her husband, Charles Shain, Mayor of Birmingham, followed in her footsteps to be a TCH President.

It is no coincidence that TCH’s front doors face Shain Park, which it proudly overlooks as the Shain legacy lives on within its walls. In 1925, TCH was voted “the official center of charitable endeavors…to promulgate the social, civic and philanthropic life of the village” – a sign of how important this small nonprofit had become as the “heart” of this community. And TCH still is today.

A tone was set that TCH would be a meeting place for all people and their needs, hoping every citizen would take a part to help serve others. The Shains and local business notables were set on making TCH a sustainable success believing “We should cherish…and do anything in our power to make this Community House a great success.”

TCH became a nonprofit that gave people access to things they couldn’t get elsewhere. A place for people to bond, get food, education, and help. TCH was the first venue for Rotary and Lions Club meetings (still meeting here today), and for The Village Players and The Village Women’s Club – legitimizing TCH’s outreach focus, since these organizations would have found it difficult to exist without the free space from TCH. Today TCH provides free space and support for a dozen such groups.

This small building became a hub of community activity, and by 1928 it was evident that a much larger facility would be required. A capital campaign was launched which raised $125,000 from area individuals, civic and social groups and businesses. In April 1930, the new building on Bates Street opened with a celebration attended by more than 5,000 people, including Clara and Henry Ford.

Today, The Community House offers over 1000 yearly class options including everything from cooking and art history classes to yoga and fitness. The Community House is home to the Early Childhood Center (child care and preschool); TCH Dance Academy; and the Sara Smith Youth Theatre. The public is welcome to join various TCH Clubs including Friends of the Gardens, the International Community Club, the Newcomers Club, as well as the Senior Men’s Club and TCH Women’s Club.

The Community House StoryTellers Guild makes hundreds of visits to twelve different schools throughout metro Detroit to share their love of storytelling. The StoryTellers have made a significant impact in promoting literacy in our community. The Guild received a Special Recognition Award on behalf of Pontiac Longfellow School’s Grade “A” Achievement which was presented to them by the Pontiac School District.

Since 1987, The Community House’s Race Relations & Diversity Task Force has reached out to the greater community by presenting monthly open forums and programs to promote discussions of race and diversity related issues. The meetings are open to all and there is no charge for admission. Annual programs include the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Celebration and the Diversity Champion Honor Roll Breakfast. The Community House received New Detroit’s prestigious “Closing the Gap” award for its support of the Task Force as well as Corp! Magazine’s “Diversity Champion” Award.

The Community House is proud to offer Youth Development Programs for At-Risk Teens and Children in Need:

iCount™: The iCount childhood obesity program instills the benefits of daily exercise, healthy eating and positive body image. TCH delivers this transformational 10 week program through nonprofit agencies in the tri-county area. iCount culminates in an exciting Vibrancy Day event celebrating their success. iCounters are challenged to log 10K steps daily, use the iCount web platform to study the nutritional value of the food they eat, and learn important life skills of accountability, attaining team goals and discipline.

Feed Your Family’s Future is a partnership with Headstart program parents and their preschool aged children throughout Oakland and Wayne counties. TCH distributes family literacy/engagement packages focusing on the following areas of impact: Family Financial Budgeting, Employment & Job Skills, Exercise & Nutrition for Families, and Coping with Stress.

Each Fall, art teachers from metro Detroit public and private schools select the artwork of over 200 student artists for the Student Art Town exhibition at The Community House. The week-long exhibit culminates with awards and a series of free children’s art workshops.

21st Century Leaders: The 21st Century Leaders program brings together forty 7th graders from area charter, public, and private schools for a bi monthly, 9 month school year focusing on topics related to becoming a leader. Students develop business acumen, etiquette skills, public speaking skills, team presentation skills, as well as relationships with other teens whom they normally would never meet. Leaders exit the program with a better sense of self-confidence of what it takes to be a true leader in their community.
