Many new building standards and regulations are coming out with ever-increasing frequency, and there are numerous opportunities to learn about these and other subjects without spending a lot of time and money traveling to distant venues around the country. The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD), NextEnergy, Automation Alley and the local chapters of ASHRAE, USGBC, BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association), IFMA (International Facility Management Association) as well as many other organizations, have seminars on an almost monthly basis from which you can learn.
There are also many webinars you can watch on your computer. Some of these even give Continuing Education Units (CEUs) – and some of them are free!
These seminars cover such diverse topics as:
- energy conservation
- indoor air quality
- conservation of energy
- HVAC system design
- lighting topics
- passing the LEED exam
- federal tax deductions
- building commissioning and retro-commissioning
- energy audits
- Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005)
- proper operating and maintenance techniques and
- utility rebates, to name only a few.
Many of these can be found on the websites of the mentioned organizations as well as others.
