Over the past week we have contacted you twice for your help to stop a bill in Congress that would strip away key protections that govern mining on federal lands – The National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act of 2012 (H.R. 4022). H.R. 4402 was passed out of committee last week and a vote in the House of Representatives could come as soon as next week.
We need to keep speaking out about this bill that will:
- Eliminate meaningful environmental review for mining projects
- Nearly eliminate opportunities for citizens to participate in critical public review of mining projects
- Speed up permitting for mines and
- Make extraction of mineral resources the top priority for federal land managers of most public lands
The 1872 Mining Law already allows multinational corporations free access to minerals on public lands with zero return to taxpayers. We don’t think they should be allowed to disregard our basic environmental laws in the process.

Thanks for your support and for taking time to help stop this law that is bad for Great Lakes communities and worse for our democracy!
