CREW Detroit, the premier business networking commercial real estate organization, hosted a “Detroit Future City” forum on March 27, 2013.
The event was held at Wayne Count Government Offices located on the 32nd floor of the Historic Guardian Building in downtown Detroit. Jumana Judeh, President of CREW Detroit informed the audience that CREW has 76 chapters throughout Canada and the United States with over 8,000 members.
Marja Winters, Deputy Director of Planning and Development for the City of Detroit presented a synopsis of Detroit Future City as it relates to development opportunities in the City. Detroit Future City has 3 long term goals: Stabilize and Sustain-a 20 year scope; Improve-a 25 year scope, and Transform-a 30 year scope and is a strategic framework that is not legally binding.
By understanding the focus of the city, CREW members can align their mission with that of the Future of the City. While the City of Detroit does not anticipate the historic 2 million residents to return, its infrastructure is still designed for such a capacity. In addition, the City would like to increase the housing density through multi-family locations.
Seven identified employment districts within the City were discussed along with the need for green and blue infrastructure for storm water management. The five planning elements that structure Detroit Future City are: economic growth, land use, city systems, neighborhood, and land and building aspects .
