Well, word of mouth is one good way to find a mechanic. Another method is going into the various bike shops and talking to the staff. Do they make you feel good about your decision to purchase a bike? Do they take the time to find out about your cycling experience? Do they have a passion about cycling? It makes a difference. I have two personal favorite bike mechanics that I use during the season, Muhammad of D & D bike shop, on 12 mile and Greenfield. I brought several bikes from Muhammad. Muhammad is knowledgeable about the experience of cycling since he rides all year.
John Hughes, the owner of the Bike Shop in Ferndale is an excellent bike mechanic. John and his staff are passionate about the experience of cycling and will take the time to assist anyone in choosing the appropriate bike. John and his staff conduct community rides during the summer. They are friendly and knowledgeable about the experience of riding.
If you are considering buying your first bike this season then stop by both bike shops:
The Bike Shop in Ferndale: John Hughes
D & D Bike Shop in Berkeley: Muhammad the bike mechanic
