When it comes to vacation opportunities, one family-focused magazine’s readers recently ranked Petoskey among 10 top tourist towns around the nation.
Petoskey landed in the No. 8 spot among tourist towns as part of FamilyFun magazine’s 2015 Travel Awards detailed in its April issue.
The magazine — which covers family-time activities such as vacations, cooking, celebrations, creative projects and more — surveyed families traveling with children ages 3-12 as part of this year’s program. More than 2,000 respondents in four U.S. regions — West, Midwest, South, and Northeast — were asked to rate more than 460 vacation spots in the five categories. In most categories, respondents provided feedback solely on regions in which they live for voting purposes.
Along with tourist towns, survey participants ranked vacation stops such as animal attractions, state parks, science museums and casual restaurants.
“The Travel Awards are such a unique program because we rely on real families to vote on their favorite destinations — from awe-inspiring science museums to charming American towns with rich history and culture,” FamilyFun editor-in-chief Ann Hallock said in a news release. “The winners in each category represent places where families have formed lasting memories, and offer adventures for all types of interests, for animal lovers to history and science buffs.”
FamilyFun magazine, which publishes 10 issues per year, reported circulation of 2.1 million as of mid-2014. It’s one of numerous publications which have included Petoskey in rankings of top U.S. communities to visit or live in. Other examples in recent years include Smithsonian Magazine, which included Petoskey in its “The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2013” feature, and Outdoor Life, which placed the community on a 2009 list of “Top 200 Towns for Sportsmen.”
