There are two (2) basic ways to back up your data. It is possible to use a combination of the two options below.
- External device. You can use a Flash Drive or External Hard Drive to back up your data. This can be a manual process or can be scheduled. If it is scheduled, remember that the software that was used to perform the backup will need to be used to recover the data. Many times, the backup uses a compressed method, where the data is reduced in size prior to being backed up.
- Off-site backup. Your data can be backed up to a Cloud (off-site server) for safe keeping. If you choose this model, make sure that the vendor that you use replicates the data to more than one data center. Also, if your business requires HIPPA or PCI compliance, be sure that your vendor provides the compliance guidelines for protecting your data.
Remember, that in the case of a disaster, the external device can be sitting next to the computer and can be damaged, too. And, in the case of theft of your laptop, the external device will probably be stolen, too.
So, what are the costs for backup? It’s not as bad as you may think. Costs shown below are for computers only (no servers):
External Device:
- Flash Drive – you can purchase a 128 GB 3.0 USB flash drive at Staples.com for $ 45.00 (plus tax)
- External Hard Drive – you can purchase a 2TB portable external hard drive at Staples.com for $ 80.00 (plus tax)
