Lawrence J. Johnson, executive director of the Dearborn Goodfellows, recently presented a check in the amount of $11,000 to Henry Ford College (HFC) on behalf of the Dearborn Goodfellows. This important funding will help establish an endowment at HFC that will provide one or more scholarships annually to deserving candidates in the form of the newly-created Dearborn Goodfellows Scholarship.
“I am proud to be a part of developing and creating the Dearborn Goodfellows Scholarship at HFC. With the support of the entire board of directors of the Dearborn Goodfellows, this scholarship was established to recognize those students who have contributed community service hours to help satisfy the needs of needy Dearborn children over a period of two or more years and are committed to obtaining a degree at (HFC),” said Johnson, a City of Dearborn employee and immediate past president of the Goodfellows.
“We are proud of our partnership with the Dearborn Goodfellows. Both organizations in their own way are dedicated to the betterment of children. I am very pleased that the Dearborn Goodfellows have created this scholarship for deserving students,” said A. Reginald Best, Jr., HFC vice president of Development.
The Dearborn Goodfellows is a committed group of volunteers dedicated to providing assistance to Dearborn children in need. They are best known for donating Christmas gifts to needy children in Dearborn and provide year-around support for needy children in Dearborn who are facing exceptional hardships and emergencies.
Established as the Good Cheer Club in 1923, the name was changed to and incorporated as the Dearborn Goodfellows in 1938. This longevity exemplifies the dedicated and committed efforts of generations of volunteers and the selfless nature of its community partners and local sponsors. It is through the unfortunate fate that a Dearborn child – through no fault of his or her own – may be in need. It is this constant need that the Dearborn Goodfellows seek to resolve and brighten the life of a child.
“The establishment of this scholarship is a huge thank-you to the recipient for what they have contributed to our organization and the community. We would hope that in helping the students become successful in their careers that they would one day return and continue to contribute to the Dearborn Goodfellows and the Dearborn community,” said Johnson.
