Beginning the week of April 9, the City of Detroit Department of Public Works will begin curbside collection of yard waste. Yard waste collection will continue through December 14.
Residents can place grass clippings, leaves, and small twigs in biodegradable paper bags on their designated bulk collection day every other week. If yard waste must be disposed of immediately, residents are encouraged to take their yard waste to any of the three DPW free drop-off locations.
All yard waste must be placed at the curb at least six feet from the Courville container in biodegradable paper bags or a personal garbage can that is clearly labeled yard waste on two sides of the container. The City’s contractors, Advanced Disposal and GFL Environmental, will not collect yard waste in plastic bags. Branches and twigs less than two inches in diameter should be cut down and placed in biodegradable bags. Branches and twigs, up to 4 feet in length and no more than 4 inches in diameter, should be bundled and tied securely. Bundles should not weigh more than 60 pounds.
In addition, beginning April 9, DPW will switch to its spring/summer operating hours of 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Southfield and Davison drop-off locations. A third location, J. Fons Transfer Station at 6451 E. McNichols, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Residents with proper identification may use the drop-off locations to discard bulk items, yard waste and recyclable items.
These hours are in effect from April 9 through the end of October for the drop-off sites:
