Look for bus bars and cables that are easily moved or reconfigured to give your operation more flexibility in moving equipment.

Electric Motors
Keep your motors running efficiently! Motors ideally operate at 80% of rated hp, allowing for the longest life. Excessive greasing is the major cause of motor failure. There are Federal and DTE incentives ( up to 250hp )for premium energy efficient motors.
Pumps
Pumps are the largest user of electricity, nationally. Other than maintenance issues, a poor performing pump gives very little indication of problems. Often times, multiple pumps run unnecessarily and the added pressure requires extra hp resulting in increased energy usage. Piping issues also affect pump performance. Pipe sizes should be considered when evaluating pump operation.
Process Controls
Use services to ensure controls are calibrated properly. Many times control loops are turned off, resulting in a loss of efficiency, poor process control, loss of product, and loss of income.

Lighting
If you have HID lighting, change to T8s or T5s with bi level switching to save energy, and where it is useful, install timers and motion sensors. Investigate the possibility of replacing 1000 watt HID fixtures with inductive lights. LEDs are cost effective where lamp replacement costs are significant. Reduced lighting energy can qualify for an EPACT 2005 federal tax deduction and a DTE rebate, plus you may earn LEED points.
