Learning for All at Meadowbrook Center for Learning

Over thirty years ago Meadowbrook Center for Learning opened its doors in Rochester. The goal was to have a place where children could go for affordable, one-to-one tutoring help, where learning challenges and differences could be addressed in a caring manner, and where no student would be turned away. In the last three decades, they have helped thousands of students and placed a special focus on raising scholarship aid money to help children with learning needs who come from economically-disadvantaged families.

Our families come from all over the area: Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Shelby Township, Lake Orion, as well as Detroit, Clawson and Utica. Many of our underprivileged families are single mothers trying to give their children the tools for success. One family in particular has a child with autism and they come every Saturday from Detroit. The relationship this student has developed with his tutor has helped him to improve his academic and social skills. They make the effort to bring their children to us because they know they will get one-to-one professional tutoring.

One student at our local school was so proud of his grade that his counselor sent us a picture with his test results and a big smile. The support and encouragement they receive enables them to regain self-esteem. As one of our students put it when asked what makes MCLD special “The confidence they have built in me, I can do anything.”

What sets Meadowbrook Center for Learning apart is the experienced tutors who are trained educators and have worked with various students’ learning challenges. This includes autism, dyslexia, epilepsy, ADHD and genetic impairments, as well as children who have no diagnosed learning problems but who, nevertheless, require extra educational support to succeed. We are able to help students from kindergarten – college in all subjects.

The 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress ranked Michigan schools 37th in the nation; it also makes a direct connection between poverty and academic achievement. In the past thirty years, legislative mandates have raised requirements for graduation and, recently, even third grade promotion. Unfortunately, statistics continue to show students still lack proficiency in math and reading. According to a recent US News report “only 37% of students are prepared for college-level math and reading.”

The Center has been awarded the 2010 Oakland University Educator of the year, 2007 and 2014 Rochester Lion’s Club Wallace M. Doc O’Brien Community Improvement Grant, 2016 Lula Wilson and Filmer Charitable Trust grants, plus 2018 Madison Community Foundation, Harrison Foundation, Filmer Trust, Rochester Junior Women’s grants.

Meadowbrook Center for Learning was established in 1988: MCLD is a 501(c)(3) non-profit governed by a local, volunteer Board of Directors. The Center’s philosophy is “We are not franchise-driven, but are deeply rooted in the community. Profit is not our bottom line – your children are.”
