DETROIT – The Millennial Mayors Congress, a voluntary partnership of city officials and young leaders representing 21 Detroit-area communities, is holding a reception on Friday, May 21 to celebrate the successes of its first year of existence.
The first year of the Millennial Mayors Congress served as a beta test for the initiative’s unique intergenerational, consensus-driven structure modeled after regional partnerships such as Chicago and Denver’s metropolitan mayors caucuses. In addition to adopting a charter, delegates developed a regional goal for reduced usage of non-renewable and created a “Millennial Engagement Committee” to identify opportunities for community involvement and leadership for young people.
The group will meet May 22 to finalize an implementation strategy for the energy goal and discuss possible next initiatives related to redevelopment and regional transit.
The anniversary celebration immediately follows the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Michigan Suburbs Alliance, the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that administers the Millennial Mayors Congress. Jay Crossley of Houston Tomorrow will keynote the meeting, discussing the Houston region’s unique approach to mapping housing and jobs to support the development of a new transit system. Both events are open to the public.
Participating communities in the Millennial Mayors Congress include Eastpointe, Farmington, Farmington Hills, Ferndale, Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Hazel Park, Highland Park, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Lincoln Park, Madison Heights, Melvindale, Mount Clemens, Pleasant Ridge, Roseville, Royal Oak, Southfield, Southgate, Sterling Heights, and Wayne.
