Did you know that certain industrial facilities are required to obtain a permit to discharge storm water? Many businesses unknowingly overlook this requirement, but the industrial storm water program is absolutely essential to protecting Michigan’s rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands.
Michigan is nestled among the Great Lakes, and is also home to 11,000 inland lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 5 million acres of wetlands. These surface waters serve as sources of drinking water, havens for recreation, and habitats for Michigan’s plants and animals. Water is the reason people come to live, work and play in Michigan.
One key to protecting surface waters is ensuring that facilities with storm water runoff exposed to industrial materials or activities come under an industrial storm water permit. To receive a permit, companies need to develop and implement a plan to prevent storm water pollution. To help facility owners comply with state and federal water quality laws, the DEQ is offering an expedited permitting process.
