The McKinney Foundation is proud to present its Second Annual “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo, to be held on Saturday, August 27, at the Athletic Field on Belle Isle in Detroit. This free event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Greater Detroit communities and families are invited.
This year’s theme will focus on Preventing Obesity and Diet Related Diseases. The Expo will offer an array of seminars, screenings, exhibits and informative speakers, all targeting health and wellness topics and issues that greatly impact families in metro Detroit. some of the health areas addressed will include: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, HIV and AIDS, depression, health literacy, preventative care, proper nutrition and fitness, and more. There will also be healthy cooking demonstrations and tasting events, as well as give a ways, music, food and fun.
Dr. John Flack, M.D. Chairman of Wayne State University School of Medicine, a noted authority on hypertension in the African-American Community and repeatedly recognized as one of America’s Best Doctors; will present a seminar on diet, obesity and chronic illness at Noon.
This year’s sponsors, partners and presenters will include, Wayne State University Physician Group, Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD), City of Detroit Health and Wellness Promotion, City of Detroit Health and Human Services, City of Detroit Transportation, City of Detroit Department of Recreation, Wayne County Health and Human Services, Molina Health care, and Media Sponsors: WDIV TV4 and GreeningDetroit.com. Additionally, the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings will also be part of this year’s expo.
The Detroit Pistons will bring out its last Championship Trophy for attendees to take pictures with for FREE. Coach Aaron Smith will host Basketball clinics from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.. members from the Pistons Automation Dance Team will be on-site to provide dance and jump rope tutorials. The Palace Patrol will be on-site making balloon animals for kids. The Red Wings will donate a Pavel Datsyuk autographed hockey puck; and the Lions will provide giveaways and promotional items for youth.
Entertainment, sponsored by GiftinMusic.com, will include a performance by international award winning singer and keyboardist Deborah Kay. In addition, hip hop artist Elijah J from Disney’s Lion King will perform, while rappers Julian and KDeezy round out the entertainment display of Detroit talent.
The “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo is the brainchild of Tiah E. McKinney of The McKinney foundation. The non-profit organization’s mission is to strengthen metro Detroit communities through creating and offering programs, events, and initiatives that promote healthier living, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility. “Last year’s expo was outstanding,” says McKinney, Founder and Executive Director of The McKinney Foundation. “However, this year’s expo will be even better as more children, teens, adults and families will come out to learn about health and wellness issues.”
