The Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) Theatre and Music Department presents “Grease,” which will play for the month of April on the weekends at the Adray Auditorium, located in the Mackenzie Fine Arts Center on the main campus.
Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. on April 13-14, and April 20-21; Sunday at 2 p.m. on April 15 and April 22. The play is directed by Judith Fletcher with technical direction by Gerard Dzuiblinski and musical direction by G. Kevin Dewey, all of whom are HFCC faculty members in Fine Arts. According to Dzuiblinski, this production was made possible by arrangement with the Samuel French Publishing Co.
Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey in 1971, “Grease” is Broadway’s 13th longest-running play. Taking place in the 1950s at the fictional Rydell High School, it recreates the early days of rock-n-roll and chronicles the love story between Danny Zuko and new girl Sandy Dumbrowski, both of whom belong to different cliques. Called a “greaser” – a reference to that era’s working-class youth subculture – Danny is one of the Burger Palace Boys (also called T-Birds in other productions), whereas Sandy is one of the Pink Ladies.
Although she’s new in town, Sandy and Danny enjoyed a brief summer romance before the school year began. When they meet again at school, Danny brushes her off to look cool and save face in front of his friends. Realizing what he’s done, he tries to win her back.
When the musical debuted, actor Barry Bostwick (“The Rocky Horror Picture Show”) played Danny, while actress Carole Demas (TV’s “Barnaby Jones”) played Sandy. A blockbuster movie adaptation of the same name was released in 1978 with Oscar nominee John Travolta (“Pulp Fiction”) and Grammy-winning singer/actress Olivia Newton-John as Danny and Sandy, respectively. Additionally, “Grease” went on to become a hit in London’s West End and enjoyed two popular Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007. It has been performed across the nation in numerous summer stock, high school, and college productions.
Tickets cost $17 for general audience members and $15 for students with a valid college photo ID. For further information and to make reservations, please contact Fletcher at (313) 845-9817 or via email at jfletcher1@hfcc.edu.
