DR. TIAH MCKINNEY, Ph.D, CO-FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
MISSION:
To strengthen the metropolitan Detroit community by reinvesting in the citizenry through quality educational programs which help promote healthy living, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility.
HOW IT IS COPING WITH THE HEALTH CRISIS AND CONTINUING TO SERVE:
The McKinney Foundation has canceled spring programming/ scheduled fundraisers and focused its efforts on providing credible, trustworthy information, resources and updates that are readily ‘accessible’ — via social media sites — to help families be empowered, educated and well-informed on how to stay healthy and safe during this pandemic.
Having access to trusted information-resources is a top priority, epecially for metro Detroit families who may be vulnerable to misleading information due to the source of their news.
Our goal is to better support local families by ensuring them access to valuable information as they take steps to protect their family, friends, and neighbors.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE, BIGGEST SUCCESS:
Our biggest challenge is lack of ‘traditional’ funding sources. Our biggest success is our enduring faith, attitude, belief and awareness that the work we do is more vital now than ever before! This year marks our 10-Year Anniversary of addressing the social determinants of health. The dire threat to ‘lives and livelihood’ posed by the coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19 has served to solidify the relevance and importance of our organization’s mission and vision. With the understanding that people are our most important asset, The McKinney Foundation looks forward to doing more to strengthen our local neighborhoods by improving the health and well-being of families.
ADVICE TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
Resolve to stay faithful and committed to your organization’s cause. Now is the time to remain connected with your Board of Directors and beneficiaries and to seek out partners! Explore creative ways to do so. Be imaginative. Keep it fun, and look for ways to spread joy, happiness and ‘tangible’ support to others during this ‘unsettling’ period.
