Rep. Pete Hoekstra (Hoekstra.Enewsletter@mail.house.gov) conducted an opinion poll regarding off-shore wind energy. He has been continuously collecting feedback from residents of West Michigan regarding Scandia Wind Energy’s proposal to build a wind farm off the coast of Oceana and Mason counties. Below are the results of the unscientific survey. The below results do not reflect the recently revised proposal.
Survey Results
- There are no circumstances that can convince me to accept wind turbines in Lake Michigan. (33%)
- I have no problem whatsoever with there being wind turbines in Lake Michigan. (19%)
- Other (16%)
- I would support the proposal because we need both the construction and long-term jobs that it could bring to the community. (10%)
- I would accept the proposal because we must move toward renewable energy at all costs. (9%)
- As long as I cannot see them, I approve them being in the lake. (5%)
- If they lower my energy prices, I support windmills in Lake Michigan. (4%)
- If it hurts tourism to our area, I cannot accept wind turbines in Lake Michigan. (2%)
- Wind turbines are too dangerous to wildlife and the environment, so I oppose any plans to put them in the lake. (2%)
- If they decrease my property value, I cannot accept wind turbines in Lake Michigan. (0.5%)
