Warren Woods Public Schools, in partnership with Commerce Township-based Michigan Solar Solutions, will unveil a solar array on the south side of the schools’ administration building at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 13.Mounted as an awning, it will provide shade during the summer while catching rays from the low winter sun.
According to Mark Hagerty, president of Michigan Solar Solutions, the solar panel will provide several important functions for the school district.
“This installation decreases the air conditioning load of the building while increasing occupant comfort and productivity,” Hagerty said. “The key benefit is the clean renewable energy that will be generated which will help decrease the district’s reliance on electricity from the utility companies.”
In addition to the economic benefits of the installation, the school district will use it as an opportunity to educate students on alternative energy echnologies.
Warren Woods Public Schools Superintendent Janet Mitchell said the district developed a renewable-energy curriculum for students specifically designed around the new solar array.
Hatzel & Buehler Electric of Livonia partnered with Michigan Solar Solutions to design and build the custom solar awning exclusively for the administration building.
The unveiling ceremony is open to the public and all are encouraged to come take part as the final pieces of the solar awning are put into place. The administration building is located at 12900 Frazho in Warren.
