Dobrasevic Food Company partners with Total Heath Foods for cooking competition.
(DOBRASEVIC FOOD COMPANY, January , 2011) Troy, MI – Dobrasevic Food Company (DFC) along with Total Health Foods (THF) is hosting the MiHealth TasteFest event on January 29, 2001 at 2:00pm. DFC is a produce delivery company that specializes in fresh, local Michigan produce. Total Health Foods is a store providing specialty health food and beauty products. This cooking competition aims to highlight the availability of fresh Michigan winter storage crops and the creative ways to use them as well as the newly formed partnership between the two businesses. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 recipes and raffled off to attendees.
DFC is hosting the cooking competition to raise awareness that, even during winter months, there is still great Michigan produce available. According to Donna Webb, DFC owner, “Michigan storage crops are items that can be stored (usually in cool cellars) for a certain length of time, depending on the item. We want people to know that you can eat Michigan apples, potatoes, cabbage, etc during these cold winter months and what a great way to keep supporting our local economy!” The other hurdle Webb states they aim to help customers get over is the unfamiliarity of some of these storage crops and how to prepare them. “Each week we include a newsletter that lists the items found in the box as well as recipes to make using some of the included items. Parsnips, for example, are a wonderful storage crop here in Michigan but not everyone knows how to cook them so we suggest recipes in our newsletter every time we include parsnips in the box. It’s amazing how many Michigan items you can eat during the winter, and we hope everyone walks away anxious to try them all!” DFC sees this competition as a fun way to engage the community as well as highlight Michigan winter produce. They partnered with Total Health Foods in Wyandotte because DFC now delivers to Wayne County and THF will be a co-op pick-up point where DFC customers can pick their produce packages.
Total Heath Foods has been in business about 2 years. They recently expanded to their new home in downtown Wyandotte. They specialize in a full range of gluten-free products. They also have wide range of organic products and carry over 300 bulk herbs as well. According to Annette, part owner of Total Health Foods, they, “were looking to provide their customers with a great local produce delivery company.” THF was using a different local produce provider when they realized that they “were getting produce from a warehouse. The second we received a tomato in the middle of summer with a Mexico sticker on it, we had to rethink things.” She continues, “We met DFC at the 2010 VegFest.. They were handing out apple samples to people. The items seemed very fresh.” DFC gathers its produce directly from growers in the morning and delivers orders on the same day which impressed THF owners. “We like to offer many things to our customers, but focusing on Michigan products and produce was the big thing for us.”
The MiHealth TasteFest event will take place at Total Health Foods in Wyandotte, MI on January, 29th, 2010 at 2:00pm. The competition will feature the use of two or more winter storage crop items which includes apples, potatoes, squash and more. The dishes will be judged based on their use of Michigan winter crops, their health appeal and taste. The prizes include: Grand Prize (1) – prize package includes two months of large produce package from Dobrasevic Food Company plus blender, shirt, and apron ($300 value)
Finalists (2) – prize package includes two weeks of large produce package from Dobrasevic Food Company plus shirt ($75 value).
