The Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG) Proprietary School Unit, along with the Michigan Association of Career Colleges & Schools (MACCS) have selected 13 proprietary school students to receive an educational achievement award, DELEG Director Steven H. Hilfinger announced today.
The award was established to recognize students who have been successful in their chosen program areas. Criteria for receiving the award included grade point average, attendance, and being a role model for others by showing perseverance in achieving training in new fields. Students were nominated by a teacher, counselor, administrator or other personnel employed by the student’s career school. The students received their award today at the MACCS Annual Meeting for Proprietary School Administrators at the Schoolcraft College Vista Tech Center in Livonia.
“These outstanding students are preparing themselves to enter a workplace and support Michigan’s economy that is quickly becoming more diversified than ever before,” said Hilfinger. “Through their determination and dedication in pursuing postsecondary education and training, they are role models for their peers who may be considering similar career paths.”
The DELEG Proprietary School Unit in the Division of Lifelong Learning is responsible for program approval and school licensing requirements of proprietary schools – postsecondary, private schools that teach a trade, occupation or vocation and offer diplomas or certificates rather than degrees. More than 450 proprietary schools are currently licensed in Michigan. In 2010, approximately 77,000 students across the state completed certificate programs offered through proprietary schools in a wide range of programs including court reporting, culinary arts, medical office administration, and patient care.
“These students exemplify the mission of career colleges and schools and vividly demonstrate the positive life changes that are possible through our sector of education,” said MACCS President Patricia Fischer.
