The Southfield Rotary & Oakland Community College Present: Encounters with Remarkable Men, a retrospective presentation by photographer Doug Elbinger. Doug Elbinger will bring you through the lens of his camera as he tells you the real stories, from behind the scenes, while shooting the photos that he has taken in over 40 years as a photojournalist. His presentation includes a diverse range of characters: from rock and roll icons to political pundits and “Green” Leaders. He will share some of these candid pictures and portraits in a new edition of his book Encounters With Remarkable Men.
Elbinger consciously knew that he that he had a rare opportunity to document history as it unfolded. His anecdotes and stories will give the audience a richer view of the world of photojournalism. Douglas Elbinger served as staff or contract photographer for the Detroit Free Press, and under four Michigan gubernatorial administrations including Governors Milliken, Blanchard, Engler, and Granholm. From the Beatles to Air Force One, he has photographed celebrities, artists, authors, including the Michigan Supreme Court. This edition of Elbinger’s book features newly added portraits of President Obama’s recent visits to Michigan, PBS director Ken Burns, and the Dali Lama’s visit to Ann Arbor. This event is free and open to the public.
