Parking lots and garages are the second and third most frequent place for nonviolent crimes and violent crimes in the United States. Security professionals agree that parking garage design influences the level of crime. The easiest way to deter criminal activity in already existing structures is by installing light, white lights coupled with occupancy sensor controls.
Lighting is the most visible form of security after dark, and good lighting is what makes people feel safe when walking to their cars at night. According to Chris McGoey, a certified safety professional and founder of crimedoctor.com, lighting in parking structures should allow a person to read building numbers and identify potential threats from 100 feet away.
John Corlette, owner of JTC Electrical in Washington, D.C., recently installed approximately 100 EverLast bi level induction garage fixtures in Capitol Park Plaza Apartments parking structure to reduce energy consumption and improve security for tenants. EverLast Lighting, a U.S. manufacturer of energy efficient induction lights, produces fixtures that provide an even light distribution that reduces glare and minimizes shadows. By producing color correlated white light, the fixtures enable pedestrians to identify potential threats easier than with typical fluorescent, incandescent, and high pressure sodium lights. “The previous linear fluorescent fixtures were installed in 1960s, so they were very efficient in terms of both energy and light output,” stated Corlette. “The new bi level induction fixtures have cut the complex energy expenses by more than half and produce a much brighter looking light that provides a better sense of security for Capitol Park tenants.”
EverLast bi level induction garage fixtures are ideal for applications that are unoccupied during parts of the night, yet security lighting is necessary. Bi level fixtures dim to 40% power when an area is vacant and step back up to 100% upon occupancy. Researchers believe that bi level occupancy sensors can help reduce crime because the change in light level upon motion will scare off potential threats.
