Today, Friday, April 20th 2012 at 1:30pm EDT student council members McIntyre Elementary were educated on how to properly plant a living tree in honor of Earth Day.
Along with the teachers and administrators at McIntyre, landscape contractors Worry Free Outdoor Services of Royal Oak educated the youngsters on why trees are important to the environment, what they provide and produce, as well as proper tree replacement procedures. Worry Frees’ landscape construction crew gave the young students a hands on demonstration on proper tree planting technique, proper species and size use, and general information about trees. The students got the chance to get their “hands dirty,” by digging and shoveling dirt, compacting and backfilling soil around the tree, fertilizing and watering. The idea is to peak the students’ interest early in “green” practices in hopes that their knowledge in demonstrating these practices will shape the future of our world’s ecology.
Students at McIntyre Elementary will also be volunteering at the South Oakland Shelter now in Southfield. They have been collecting clothes and raising funds for months for the South Oakland Shelter and less fortunate children.
