The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration is using solar-powered robots to track hurricane and tropical storm activity. Solar panels on the top of the robots provide renewable energy to power its data collection equipment.
Researchers at Vanderbilt University are working on boosting solar cell efficiency by experimenting with silicon wafers coated in a protein extracted from spinach. The wafers produce an electric current that is nearly 2-1/2 times higher than existing biohybrid solar cells.
