The Dearborn Animal Shelter is in the midst of a nationwide competition, the $100K Challenge from Rachael Ray and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). During the three months of August, September and October, the Shelter must increase the number of adopted animals by at least 300 compared to last year to be in contention for grant money up to $100,000.
To achieve the goal, 50 more animals need to find adoptive homes between now and October 31st for the Shelter to be a contender in the national competition and put metro Detroit on the animal sheltering map. That is an industrious, but possible goal, with help from the community.
Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter said, “This is a prestigious competition in the Sheltering industry, but it also means a lifelong victory for each of the animals that we manage to place. We are in the home stretch and just need a little hand up from the community to reach our number. If you know anyone considering bringing a new pet family member into their home, please ask them to consider the Dearborn Animal Shelter.”
To help encourage adoption, fees are reduced now through October 31st. Cats (4 mos+) are only $5 to adopt and dogs (4 mos+) are 50% off regular adoption fees. There are several hundred animals available for adoption that can be seen in person at the Shelter and many online http://www.dearbornanimals.org/adopt/adoptable-animals/ .
