Summer visitors to the popular Oscoda Beach Park in Iosco County can gain a whole new perspective this year – from the brand new fishing and observation pier extending more than 300 feet into Lake Huron.
Completed last fall, the pier is connected to a new, universally accessible 150-foot wooden boardwalk. Now, visitors of all levels of physical ability have a barrier-free, lighted route from the parking lot, across the beautiful sand beach to the end of the pier. A Coastal Zone Management grant to the Charter Township of Oscoda contributed to the project.
The pier opened to the public in October, and Oscoda residents began using it immediately and continued to visit the pier throughout the winter, braving chilly temperatures.
Use of the boardwalk and pier has boomed with the onset of summer vacation season. Mr. Jim Baier, Oscoda Charter Township Supervisor, is one of the project’s local champions. “This is the very first summer and tourist season for our new Oscoda Beach Park Pier. People — both locals and visitors — are loving it! I’ve heard nothing but great comments.”
