The Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands Consortium was formed in 2000 to develop a basin‐wide monitoring plan to assess the status and trends of coastal wetland ecosystem health. The plan was finalized in 2008 and implementation began in 2011 as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. During the first 5-year cycle (2011–2015), data on vegetation, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, birds, and water quality are being collected at over 1,000 coastal wetlands across the Great Lakes basin using standardized protocols. Information collected by the monitoring program is being used by federal, state, tribal and local government agencies as well as non-governmental organizations to evaluate the success of current wetland restoration projects. Data are also being used to prioritize future protection and restoration efforts basin-wide.
The webinar will provide an overview of the monitoring program and describe several examples of how the data are being used for wetland protection and restoration across the Great Lakes region.
Presenters will include:
- Donald G. Uzarski
Director, Institute for Great Lakes Research
Director, Central Michigan University Biological Station
Professor, Department of Biology, Central Michigan University
- Matthew Cooper
PhD Candidate, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Notre Dame
- Valerie Brady

The webinar is intended to be informative for restoration practitioners, researchers, potential grant applicants, other funders, and anyone with an interest in the monitoring of Great Lakes coastal wetlands.
The webinar will begin at 10 AM Eastern Time/9 AM Central Time and last for approximately 2 hours. You can register at:https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/832871128
