In anticipation of the announcement of this year’s Newbery Medal winner, Ferndale Public Library has collaborated with Ferndale Middle School to put on Fernbery 2014, a mock Newbery program.
Ferndale Middle School students were asked to read books from a list of Newbery hopefuls provided by the library. Students who read at least two books are granted a trip to the library on Monday, January 27th at 8 a.m. where they will casts their votes for a winner, watch a live webcast of the real ALA Youth Media Awards ceremony and enjoy specialty donuts from Treat Dreams.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Ferndale Middle School again,” said head of youth services Jillean McCommons. “Fernbery helps us to promote award-winning books and to foster critical analyses of youth fiction published in a given year. It also allows us to collaborate with Ferndale Middle School in supporting their curriculum goals. We also want to make reading fun for kids. I think reading books that others are reading nationally and then deciding whether they are worthy of an award does just that. And we get to eat donuts while we do it!”
The John Newbery Medal is awarded annually to an author who makes, “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children,” according to the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, who administers the award each year.
