Consumers Energy announced plans today to purchase a 540 megawatt natural gas power plant in Jackson, and will place on hold plans for a new $700 million, 750 megawatt, gas plant in Thetford Township, Genesee County. The proposed purchase price for the new plant is $155 million and would be added to Consumers Energy’s generating system in the first quarter of 2016 to partially replace electric capacity from seven older coal-fired plants planned for retirement in April 2016. Purchase of the Jackson plant is subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The Michigan EIBC is a formal intervenor in the regulatory proceedings around Consumers’ previously proposed Thetford Plant development, and will continue to engage to ensure the utility has adequately considered the full range of options, including renewable generation and energy efficiency.
