Yesterday I announced my candidacy for the 14th Congressional District, which stretches for 75 miles from Pontiac to Southwest Detroit.
In Congress, I’ll fight for working families and demand a higher and fairer minimum wage, as well as paycheck equity for women. As a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, I’ll work tirelessly for common sense gun safety laws. I’ll fight for jobs and a strong educational system to ensure the futures of our children–one that doesn’t leave them with debt they can never repay. Finally, I will never allow Medicare or Social Security to be weakened, but I will work to stabilize them both.
I’m the only candidate in this race who has run a government, improved lives and helped those who need a helping hand, and I can tell you first hand, Experience Matters!
After polling the district and talking to my supporters, the results were clear. Every poll we saw had our campaign in first place, with our closest opponent polling at only 8%. The success of the poll, together with our raising more than $100,000 in 30 days during the holiday season (the most difficult time of the year to raise money), made my decision clear – Southeastern Michigan needs a Fighter with a Proven Record in Congress.
My experience in a legislative body for four years and running a government as the Mayor of the great City of Southfield for the last 12 years makes me the most qualified candidate in this race by far. No one in this race will fight harder or do more for the 14th District than I will.
While there is much hard work to do, our campaign is ready, able, willing and already on the ground. But I can’t do it alone, and that’s why I’m asking for your support to help keep this momentum building with a contribution of $500, $250, $100, or $50 today.
