The Lake Erie Binational Public Forum invites you to participate in the upcoming webinar to learn about the latest science and management approaches being applied to better understand issues affecting the Lake Erie Basin. The Forum works to help restore and maintain the integrity of the basin’s ecosystem through engagement in the Lakewide Action and Management Plan (LAMP). To learn more about the Forum and the LAMP see here: http://lakeerieforum.org/.
Lake Erie provides drinking water for millions of people and supports a multi-billion dollar tourism industry. Unfortunately, both are threatened by toxic algal blooms. According to the latest predictions, we are on track to see what is called a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) bigger than the 2013 occurrence, which rendered a whole township, and almost the city of Toledo, without drinking water.
Join us to learn more about Harmful Algal Blooms as we host a webinar featuring experts that will talk about Microcystis, predictions for this year’s harmful algal bloom, and challenges water treatment plants face to ensure we have safe drinking water.
As if the blooms weren’t bad enough, tiny pieces of plastic particles are becoming a serious concern for Lake Erie and the issue is gaining more attention due to recent research showing micro-plastics are accumulating at surprising levels in Lake Erie. Fish consume these plastics, which concentrate up the food chain as bigger fish eat smaller fish, which ultimately land on kitchen tables. Hear from one of the leading scientists about this growing problem and the latest research results.
