Over thirty pieces of Sandy Rice’s original art sculptures, prints, and paintings will fill the Ferndale Public Library. Her art is crafted from wooden pieces that are painted, carved, and joined together, often with patterns derived from geometry and nature. Rice considers herself “more of a relief sculptor than a painter.”
“I have two modes of working,” the Troy-based artist explains. “One which produces what I call talismans and one which I call tapestries. When I make tapestries, I assemble bits of wood in a way quite like quilt-making, and I allow them to come together quite randomly, so I can surprise myself. When making talismans, I dig into my darker side, exploring dreams and memories. I like to be surprised, even disturbed, by the results.”
Sandy Rice is a seasoned, award-winning artist who has exhibited all over the country since her first show at Eastern Michigan University in 1984. She earned her Masters’ Degree in fine arts from Wayne State University.
