Registration for Henry Ford College’s (HFC) Camp Henry Program is now open. This program offers six summer camps for kids in 5th grade and up.
The camps being offered are:
Project Lead the Way (PLTW) – Middle School Students (cost is $100);
It’s in the Genes: Unraveling DNA’s Secrets – Middle School Girls (cost is $160);
What STEMs From Here? – Middle School Students (cost is $200);
What STEMs From Here? – High School Students (cost is $200);
Camp 5101: Henry Ford College Culinary Kids Camp – 5th grade through age 15 (cost is $200); and
Camp RN: Middle School Students (cost is $225).
PLTW, 8 a.m. – noon, Monday, June 15—Friday, June 19. This opportunity incorporates authentic project and inquiry-based challenges to stimulate necessary 21st Century skills. Both individual and team activities allow students to learn science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) content through application, critical thinking and problem solving. Connections to the real-world are emphasized using the latest technology and hands-on investigations. The curriculum will integrate aspects of PLTW’s Gateway Academy.
It’s in the Genes, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday, July 27—Thursday, July 30. This program emphasizes fun hands-on activities and actual lab work that highlights the structure of the cell and the structure and function of DNA. Faculty and students will also discuss the role of DNA in genetics, health and disease, biotechnology and forensics. Lab activities will include extracting DNA from plant cells and analyzing DNA using forensic science techniques. During lunch, women leaders in STEM fields will join the girls for informal discussions of career paths in these various areas. Bring your own lunch.
What STEMS From Here? 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday, July 20—Friday, July 24, for HIGH SCHOOL students; 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday, July 27—Friday, July 31, for MIDDLE SCHOOL students. This experience highlights robotics, design and manufacturing. Students also learn about opportunities in STEM as well as entrepreneurship. This experience includes hands-on and in-class time as well as tours. Lunch is included.
Camp 5101, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday, June 15—Thursday, June 18. This is an introductory level course where students learn basic aspects of cooking and baking through a wide variety of hands-on activities. Students will prepare dishes in a professional kitchen and receive an introduction to kitchen fundamentals, such as safety, sanitation, and different cooking methods. Initiatives include farm to fork, nutrition and health eating, a day in the bake shop and kids take over the kitchen.
Camp RN, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday, July 13—Friday, July 17. Camp RN participants study anatomy and physiology and nutritional science, while learning nursing fundamentals such as CPR and first aid. Participants also tour the HFC M-TEC Center, interact with nurses in a hospital setting and utilize the physical assessment laboratory to learn about the human body.
