Join Automation Alley, Michigan’s largest technology business association, and two HR law experts for a discussion on hiring hot topics, Dec. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Automation Alley Headquarters in Troy.
Organized by Automation Alley’s Education and Workforce Committee, the “Hot Topics in HR Law” lunch ‘n’ learn is the fourth in Season 2 of the “Michigan’s Got Talent” event series, and is intended for human resource professionals, recruiters and small to medium-sized business owners.
Attendees will hear from Gail Cober, director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and James Rosenfeld of the Butzel Long law firm as they discuss hot topics in legal employment from both employer and employee perspectives.
Topics will include:
Recruitment and hiring practices
Background checks, including criminal background and credit history
Gender orientation and gender identity issues as sex discrimination under Title VII
“It’s imperative that local business owners and HR professionals stay abreast of new workplace trends and understand the ever-evolving legal guidelines for hiring and building policies for employees,” said Karol Friedman, Automation Alley’s director of talent development. “We are excited to host Gail Cober and James Rosenfeld, two employment law experts who will be on hand to present some hot topics in HR law and answer questions you may have related to these key issues.”
James Rosenfeld is a shareholder practicing in Butzel Long’s Detroit office. He practices in the area of labor and employment law and serves as the manager of Butzel Long’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. He has extensive experience in litigating a wide variety of labor and employment cases, including trial and appellate work in both state and federal court. He also has experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements, and handling labor arbitrations and hearings before the National Labor Relations Board. In 2009, Rosenfeld served as a member of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s Crisis Turnaround team, focusing on labor relations and human resource issues.
Gail Cober is director of the EEOC Detroit Field Office. She is a graduate of Wayne State University Law School and began her career with the Detroit Office of the EEOC as a trial attorney in 1989. As a trial attorney, Cober litigated employment discrimination cases on behalf of the EEOC and served as in house counsel to a team of EEOC investigators. During her tenure with the EEOC, Cober has spearheaded a variety of innovative programs in the Detroit Office, has participated in a number of agency taskforces, has contributed to the development and delivery of several major nationwide training programs and has participated in a number of EEOC outreach programs.
