The Royal Oak Community Coalition in partnership with Royal Oak Schools and the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities presents a one day opportunity to explore complementary and integrative practices that maintain and sustain optimal health and empower people when challenging a health related condition.
The evolution of medicine is moving toward a whole person approach designed to treat the person, not just the disease. The goal is to treat the mind, body and spirit all at the same time.
In 1993, integrative medicine got a boost of greater public awareness after a landmark study confirmed one in three Americans had used a complementary therapy. Physicians and academic research finally have the science to understand these connections and no longer consider complementary approaches fringe.
The appeal of integrative modalities is treating the whole person by blending both conventional and holistic approaches that will improve the management of illness at all levels. The aim is to take into account not only the physical symptoms but also psychological, social and spiritual aspects of health and illness.
Another consideration of addressing health conditions through the application of hoslitic practices is some individuals are reluctant to use medications due to potential side effects, adverse interactions with other drugs or are in recovery from an addiction.
While seeking traditional medical care is important, complementary and integrative modalities empower an individual to assist in the process and provides another support system for those challenging a physical or mental health condition.
By putting complementary and integrative health and physical, emotional, and mental health on community agenda, the ROCC pursues a crucial quest to encourage a shift in health care practices from passive to active participation and leadership.
The Holistic Health and Wellness Expo is an unique experience by providing the public with an opportunity to meet directly with Practitioners, Health Care Produce Vendors and attend one of the 27 mini- classes offered throughout the day. A $5.00 donation at the door supports community related wellness programs.
