Detroit residents who have been living next to blighted homes for years now have a powerful new tool that lets them look months into the future to see what houses near them will be torn down and when.
The city’s new online Demolition Tracker map lists not only the more than 9,500 structures demolished since January 2014, it also include more than 700 addresses currently under contract for demolition that will come down in the next several months. The map is updated daily.
The Demolition Tracker map, which has been in development for more than a year, can be accessed through the city of Detroit website at www.detroitmi.gov/demolition. Residents using the Demolition Tracker can simply type in any address in Detroit into the search bar to see what demolitions already have taken place and which houses are under contract for demolition and when they are projected to be knocked down.
The map displays a blue dot for every house that has come down since January 2014 and an orange dot for those contracted and scheduled for demolition. By clicking on a dot, residents can see information on that demolition, including the cost, contractor and planned or actual knock down date
Mayor Mike Duggan, Flex-N-Gate employees and representatives from the Department of Neighborhoods met with east side community members on Friday to discuss construction of the upcoming Flex-N-Gate facility.
Flex-N-Gate, is a top global auto supplier of exterior trim components, aluminum and steel modular stamped body in white and chassis assemblies, lighting and other OEM automotive products. Flex-N-Gate owner Shahid Khan said his company will invest $95 million in construction and capital costs for a facility that will supply parts to Ford Motor Company. The project is expected to create at least 400 — and up to 650 new jobs — in Detroit over the next three years. At full capacity, the plant could add up to 750 total jobs in the city.
Flex-N-Gate has committed to meeting Detroit-based hiring and contracting thresholds and to develop a comprehensive hiring plan in conjunction with the City’s Human Rights Department and Detroit Employment Solutions Corp. to help ensure jobs for Detroiters.
During the meeting, the Mayor discussed the Flex-N-Gate project design proposal and answered questions about community benefits, including employment opportunities.
