The Michigan Agency for Energy (MAE) today issued a Clean Energy Manufacturing Roadmap, a collaborative effort between the state of Michigan and Northeast Ohio, which focuses on developing strategies for advancing the energy efficient building technology (EEBT) cluster and developing technology roadmaps for several energy intensive, clean energy manufacturing processes to reduce the energy cost of these processes.
“For Michigan, this roadmap demonstrates the opportunities that lie in strengthening clean energy manufacturing to diversify and strengthen the economy,” said MAE Executive Director Valerie Brader. “By implementing the report’s recommendations, clean energy manufacturing will continue to play a role in advancing Governor Rick Snyder’s energy vision for Michigan, one built on affordability, reliability and environmental protection.”
The report’s section on Michigan lists three goals to implement plans related to Michigan’s EEBT: strengthening research and development (R&D) where most intellectual property development and investment occurs; strengthening the energy efficiency value chain; and increasing deployment efforts.
Three additional goals deal with Michigan’s clean energy manufacturing: generating more R&D in materials, components, subsystems, and production processes that will lead to increased clean energy manufacturing activity; fostering the creation of more competitive clean energy manufacturing products by focusing improvements on design and yield, while still making gains in energy reduction costs; and strengthening Michigan’s export activity. Each goal includes recommendations and suggested next steps.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, MAE led this project in partnership with the Ohio Development Services Agency’s Office of Energy and Redevelopment to provide management and public sector involvement. NextEnergy, which serves as a catalyst for advanced energy technology demonstration and commercialization in Michigan, and Team NEO, a regional private-sector organization serving the 18 counties of Northeast Ohio, conducted the technical analysis and provided private sector involvement and perspective.
