The Southeast Michigan Sustainable Business Forum (SMSBF) in partnership with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is excited to announce, “Nurturing Sustainable Communities from the Ground-Up”. This event will be of particular interest to community leaders, business leaders, regulators, planners, developers and others who desire an active role in the future of our community. The event is being held on February 23, 2017 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Roberts Riverwalk Hotel, which is situated in Downtown Detroit along the beautifully revitalized Detroit Riverfront.
Billed as an “enhanced stakeholder engagement”, the event will explore the ways in which the physicality of public space supports human health; the ways in which the practice of commerce and industry lead to meaningful work; the ways in which diversity and inclusiveness lead to vibrant communities, and finally, how these three elements intersect in ways that lead to a flourishing of human existence. The agenda includes a keynote address, presentations, a panel discussion, and a “small group dynamic”, which will allow attendees to participate in a non-convergent, group dialogue about what they’ve heard and what they foresee as being necessary to nurture sustainable communities.
According to Mike Shesterkin, president of the SMSBF, “Nurturing Sustainable Communities is designed to bring people together – face to face – for the purpose of exploring ideas and gaining insights. This event will provide the space for networking and civil and open dialogue about the most pressing matter of our day: achieving sustainability and the revitalization of our communities. We’re particularly looking forward to the small group dynamic, which is designed to open-up the subject matter in facilitated conversations of between eight to ten people. The discussions will be ‘non-convergent’. Participants will contribute to the conversation without having to convince others of the rightness or wrongness of a particular point of view. The idea is to simply gain useful insights that lead to action.”
The event steering team is comprised of a diverse group of entities, including OHM Advisors, the City of Dearborn, the MDEQ and Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice. To learn more about the event, go to http://smsbf.org/.
