You may have seen on the local news the story of Molly and Dawson. These two pooches were rescued from the Rouge River after a day-long effort.
They’re now safe and sound in our care. Now we may not have the details on how they got themselves into that situation, but we are happy that they’re out of the elements and almost ready for adoption.
In fact, they just returned to the shelter after an overnight stay with a local veterinarian to get spayed and neutered. We cannot thank the Dearborn Police Department, Dearborn Fire Department, and our Animal Control officers enough for their dedication to rescuing these dogs. Hats off to the local media outlets for coverage of the rescue.
Currently we are experiencing an above average population increase with our dogs. In fact, in just three days, we welcomed 15 dogs including Molly and Dawson. We’ve begun to utilize our once Cat Community Centers as temporary housing for incoming dogs. Coming into the New Year, the number of shelter dogs is up 25% and this month alone our intake of homeless dogs increased by 15%.
How can you help? Consider opening your homes to a new best friend, foster a dog for a little while, or even experience a weekend slumber party. If you’re interested, please email us at hmehi@metrodetroitanimals.org.
We also want to remind you that we have low-cost microchip vouchers available for purchase. They are only $15 and include lifetime registration. We see animals reunited all the time because their owner had them microchipped. Sometimes collars slip and tags fall off. This is a form of lifesaving technology that takes a few moments to place the chip and is permanent identification. The more animals and humans we can reunite the better. Take advantage of this low price and give your pet the insurance to get them back home.
