Directed by Mary F. Bremer-Beer, who teaches theatre at HFC, “Shooting Stars” is the second play of the HFC 2017 summer stock program.
The story takes place during the week of Christmas in 1962, specifically in the locker room of a small town gym. There, a touring women’s basketball team called the Shooting Stars are preparing to face off against a local men’s basketball team. The Stars are owned and managed by a man named Cassius, who hands out assignments, rides herd on their diets, and even persuades Wilma – the team’s star center – to forego election into the Basketball Hall of Fame since Cassius is worried this honor might cause dissension in the ranks.
Suddenly, Cassius dies of a heart attack. The Stars must decide their own fate. Do they give up? Do they soldier on? Are they really a team? Or are they really just a disparate collection of individuals without a leader? How they rise to the occasion is both moving and funny, according to Bremer-Beer.
“This play is a brash, fast-moving study of seven high-spirited girls with distinct and quirky personalities. We get to know their personal lives and their dreams, as well as what makes them a winning team. It’s a wonderful comedy built around female banter and a heaping helping of truthfulness,” said Bremer-Beer.
“Shooting Stars” is written by Molly Newman, an Emmy Award-winning television writer and producer and a Tony Award nominee. She began her playwriting career as co-author of “Quilters.” She has written for the TV series “Murphy Brown,” “Frasier,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Code Black,” “Brothers & Sisters,” “Political Animals,” “Lucky,” “Tarzan,” “7th Heaven,” “Maximum Bob,” “Cupid,” and “Tracy Takes On…”
