This week’s article talks about those emails that we receive that attract our attention to the content. It’s the subject line and the name of the sender that attract our attention.
For example, I recently received an email from Chase with the subject line of “Action Required”. The wording of the email is shown below – it looks real, but it’s NOT.
So, why wouldn’t you click on the area that says “Click Here”.
- Do you really have an account with Chase?
- Look at the email address. What is the domain of guim. com? Is this Chase? A search of this domain name shows that it does not exist.
- Was your name in the TO field? Recipients indicates that this was a mass mailing. IF this was true, the message would have your name in it. Actually, if there was a problem, Chase would call you on the phone or send a letter to you in the US Mail.
- If you hover your mouse over the “Click Here” field, you will see the following address (this is not Chase): httpx://decorplantasforestal. com/plugins/font/css/processing.php
So, the best solution is three-fold: First, look at the email slowly, before rushing to click on a link. Second, setup your Junk Mail Filter in your email program to identify this type of message as Junk; and Third, install a security software program that will inspect your email messages to identify possible “phishing” scams.
The actual email arrived in my Junk Mail folder with the following indicator on the email. This is another suggestion that you should not click on the link in the message:
