SUMMER HOURS @ DPL
From now through Labor Day, most branch libraries are open on Fridays and closed on Saturdays. (See Locations for details.)  Sunday service at Main Library and Redford and Wilder branches will resume on October 7, 2018.

Reading Teacher in the Library
DPL’s “Reading Teacher in the Library,” a free summer program that connects struggling readers in grades K-3 to certified reading specialists, will expand to several additional branches this summer. The program will be offered again at the Duffield and Parkman branches, and will be expanded to include the Jefferson, Conely, Wilder and Edison branches.
Young students are assessed by reading specialists who evaluate the obstacles that prevent them from reading at grade level. By working one-on-one and/or in small groups with the students, there is the opportunity to develop and strengthen reading skills.
Programs will begin in late June – early July. Registration required. For additional information, contact the participating branches:

2018 African American Booklist
Visit any DPL location for your copy of our 2018 African American Booklist, “Knowing and Teaching: African American Children’s Literature .” The cover features artwork from the 2017 Caldecott Medal winner, Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquait, by Javaka Steptoe. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, a scholar on African American children’s literature, has provided an insightful essay into the history of this genre. The Booklist also includes an interview with Javaka Steptoe by 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow, Desiree Cooper. Also, our children’s librarians have provided their top ten picks of picture and chapter books. Don’t miss out!

Detroit Public Library Art and Architectural Tours
The tour highlights the architecture of Cass Gilbert, as well as the many works of famed craftsmen and architects. Our docents will share with you the history, art and architecture of Detroit’s acclaimed Main Library. You will discover the Grand Staircase, the Pewabic fireplace and other surprises along your 1 mile walking journey.

Tours are available on a first come basis and are limited to 30 people. Tours last approximately one hour and begin from the Cass vestibule, through the library’s Cass Avenue entrance.
