TRU’S 2015 REGIONAL TRANSIT AWARDS MOVES DETROIT FORWARD
Celebrating its 14th year of being the public’s voice to ensure transportation decisions in Michigan support the greater public good, the Transportation Riders United (TRU) organization held its annual awards dinner at the St. Regis Hotel on May 7th. The theme of this year’s event was “transit matters” …. and it certainly does for thousands of people on a daily basis. With May designated as Electrical Safety Month, citizens are urged to practice electrical safety and be aware of potential home electrical hazards especially in older homes, previously owned homes, homes that have been renovated or where major new appliances have been added within the last 10 years.
In February, my family flew to California to visit my in-laws in the San Francisco area. It poured constantly for days, and our California family was visibly relieved for rain. Three years of drought were weighing heavily in our conversations. The lawn had been removed and drought tolerant plants were maturing; buckets were in showers; and the toilets were… mellow. The storms passed, delivering 13 inches of rain across the region. SF Gate reported nearby water reservoirs were up to 71 percent and 64 percent of their normal capacity. Not enough to call policy makers to ease water restrictions, rather, the storm solidified bad news – more water restrictions ahead.

The Energy Department today announced $10.5 million in available funding to support the design and operation of innovative marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) systems through survivability and reliability-related testing of these systems. Such advances will help these devices harness even more sustainable energy from the enormous potential of the nation’s oceans and rivers.
Michigan may have already harvested its low-hanging fruit on renewable energy. Opportunities exist to greatly expand cleaner energy sources statewide, but they will come with more challenges.
