Green City Diaries: The Journey Begins Now
Detroit: green city? It’s a little counter-intuitive, I know. We are, after all, the ignoble home of the most polluted zip code in the state and the largest trash incinerator in the country. We’re the only major city in the nation to lack city-wide curbside recycling. We unleashed the automobile and its attendant environmental woes to the world, of course, and our historic inability to build and sustain effective public transit is legendary (and continues). We recently polled several area green building experts to identify the industry trends and issues they see affecting West Michigan and the world in the near future. Here, in no particular order, are our findings:
The Michigan-based website, MyNewMarketplace.com, has announced the winners of two random drawings for an Apple iPad 2. To be entered in the contest, winners were required to be members of the website’s online community which is designed to help individuals and businesses buy and sell almost anything.
The Hunger Games. It’s the biggest book series for young adults, and Ferndale Schools and Ferndale Public Library are cashing in on the buzz to get kids reading in a big way. Ferndale Middle School, in partnership with Ferndale Public Library presents FMS is Reading…The Hunger Games, a series of events and book discussions for kids, centered around The Hunger Games.
On Sunday evening, January 8, 2012, at the Sound Board Theatre in the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit, Michigan, the 16thAnnual Urban Wheel Awards honored both companies and individuals for advancing diversity in the automobile industry. The Urban Wheel Awards were developed to recognize and honor diversity in the automotive industry and the awards ceremony were co-hosted by celebrities Phylicia Rashad and Jon Quinones.
When the space shuttle takes off, it burns two-thirds of its fuel in the first 20 minutes. The remaining supply is ample for up to two weeks of continued flight. It takes tremendous force to bust through the gripping constraints of gravity.
