Community-Based Non-Profit Organizations Encouraged To Seek ‘Oakland Together’ COVID-19 Economic Impact Grants

Pontiac, Michigan – Community non-profit organizations based in Oakland County whose revenues have been hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic have two weeks to apply for a grant from the Oakland Together Economic Impact fund.

The grants, which are made possible through federal CARES Act funding, are designed to help non-profit organizations that have suffered revenue loss or increased expenditures directly related to the pandemic. A grant can be used to support operation costs as determined by the organization. Applications are being accepted through Monday, November 23 at https://www.oakgov.com/covid/grants/Pages/non-profit-economic-impact.aspx.

“So many of our non-profit organizations rely on community support and fund-raising activities and have suffered severe economic losses during the pandemic,” Oakland County Executive David Coulter said. “At the same time, they continue to provide valuable services to our residents and it’s important we do everything we can to help them at this critical time.”

To be eligible, an organization must be a non-profit with tax-exempt status, be physically located in Oakland County and provide most of its services to county residents. The organization also must have had a 10 percent revenue loss related to the pandemic. The grants are expected to be disbursed in early December. Oakland County allocated all $219 million it received in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding, including more than $140 million in grants to help stabilize and support small businesses, residents and communities in every part of the county. The grants have been awarded to more than 10,000 local businesses, which employ 65,000 employees; 22 local chambers of commerce; 28 local school districts; residents having trouble making rent or mortgage payments, retailers, restaurants and communities, among others.

Oakland County Executive David Coulter set a collaborative tone and ambitious agenda to expand health care for county residents, ensure adults complete needed education and job certifications, move a county division and its staff to downtown Pontiac, and triple defense investment in the county by 2025.

Coulter outlined his “Oakland Together” plan Wednesday evening before a full house at the Flagstar Strand Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Pontiac.

“I believe the fact that Oakland does well means we have an opportunity – indeed a responsibility – to do better,” Coulter said. “We can leverage our strengths to tackle our challenges before they become problems. We can lead and innovate. We can be fiscally responsible with taxpayer money and forward thinking. To do that, we must be Oakland Together. Together as public servants working for the public good, together with our residents and businesses, and together with our region.”

Coulter emphasized important themes to many Oakland County residents and businesses – good government, maintaining the AAA bond rating, a balanced budget, providing services for an aging population, making housing more affordable, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

County Executive Coulter Launches Historic Health Care Expansion and Partnership

Pontiac, Michigan – Oakland County Executive David Coulter announced a transformational expansion of health care and support services in Oakland County today that will be available to over 227,000 residents who are uninsured or underinsured. Oakland Health 360 is a strategic partnership of Oakland County Health Division, Honor Community Health, and Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) that will enhance access to primary care, mental and behavioral health, family planning, and dental services, especially for women and children.

“Oakland Health 360 is a game changer for those who are uninsured or underinsured in Oakland County,” Coulter said at a news conference announcing the alliance today. “If you come in one of our doors to have your child immunized or receive a lead screening, I want you to be able to have a cancer or diabetes screening, talk to a mental health professional, get assistance with prescription drug costs, have a dental checkup and receive primary care.”

General primary care, family planning services, dental care, mental health, and community support services will soon be available at the North Oakland Health Center in Pontiac and the South Oakland Health Center in Southfield provided by Honor Community Health. When complete, this partnership will include mental and behavioral health services and a partnership with Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency to ensure residents have important supportive services, including access to insurance coverage, Head Start early childhood education and emergency services such as energy, food and housing assistance.

“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as a major partner with a county that understands the need for us to work together for the betterment of our community,” said Debbie Brinson, CEO of Honor Community Health.

Coulter outlined some significant and unacceptable health disparities in Oakland County during the news conference. There is a 14 to 20-year difference in life expectancy based on where one lives in Oakland County.

For example, there are neighborhoods in Pontiac where the life expectancy is only 66. And in Southfield neighborhoods where life expectancy is only 72. Contrast these to a neighborhood in Troy – just 10 miles from Pontiac – where the average life expectancy is 86.

The partnership addresses many common barriers to healthcare residents may experience in two high-risk communities with limited access to medical and mental health services. In 2018, among residents living in seven cities, 37% lack access to sufficient primary care services and 39% of residents in these same areas lack access to adequate mental health services.

There are also a higher percentage of residents living in these areas who are uninsured compared to the overall county, and a significant portion who have not received key preventive services or dental care. These communities include Ferndale, Hazel Park, Lathrup Village, Madison Heights, Pontiac, Oak Park, a zip code in Troy and Southfield.

“Many of our clients face a complexity of issues when they must seek assistance at multiple locations and providers. Creating a one-stop-shop for these services, allows us to better address the full spectrum of needs we identified in these communities,” said Kathy Forzley, director of Oakland County Health and Human Services.

Oakland Health 360 will include integration of OLHSA’s, Welcome Center expertise that provides navigation services for a variety of programs including, MDHHS benefits assistance, health insurance navigation, utility assistance, home weatherization and emergency rent assistance.

“We will now be able to better connect our customers to the many helpful programs and resources that are available in a streamlined and more efficient way,” said Susan Harding, CEO of OLHSA.

Saturday Is Last Call This Year To Drive In, Drop Off Hazardous Household Waste At NoHaz Collection Event

Waterford, Michigan – Residents of 18 Oakland County communities have a final chance this year to dispose of their household hazardous waste in a safe and environmentally responsible way.

The NoHaz Consortium collection event is set for Saturday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Oakland County Service Center, 1200 N. Telegraph Road, in Pontiac. The site is near building 26E on the county campus. Signs on the campus will direct residents to the collection location.

“The collection gives residents of our 18 NoHaz Consortium communities a safe and responsible way to dispose of a variety of household hazardous waste,” County Executive David Coulter said. “If you live in a NoHaz community, this is your last opportunity this year to drop off household hazardous waste.”

Household hazardous waste (HHW) items include paints, bleach, computer and electronic waste, insecticides and propane cylinders, among other items. Only residential waste is accepted – no contractor or business waste. A complete list of acceptable items – and those that will not be accepted – is available at www.NoHaz.com.

Residents of the 18 communities may dispose of their HHW for a nominal fee of $10, $15 or at no charge, depending on their community. Any Oakland County resident who does not reside in a NoHaz community may dispose of acceptable materials for a fee of $50. The fee list is found at www.NoHaz.com.

The NoHaz communities are Addison Township, Brandon Township, Groveland Township, Independence Township, Lake Angelus, Lake Orion Village, Leonard Village, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Ortonville, Oxford Township, Oxford Village, Pontiac, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Rose Township, Springfield Township and Waterford Township.

The NoHaz Consortium is a group of Oakland County communities that have come together to provide residents with a safe, reliable and environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste. These wastes are the substances in your home that can be harmful to humans and the environment if not disposed of properly.

Coulter Names April Lynch Deputy County Executive

Pontiac, Michigan Oakland County Executive David Coulter has appointed April McGrath Lynch deputy county executive. McGrath, who has served as associate vice president of human resources and payroll at the University of Detroit Mercy since March, is the third woman in Oakland County history to be appointed to the role. She will oversee human resources among other duties.

Oakland County MichiganOperation Good Cheer takes to the skies to deliver about 20,000 Christmas gifts to more than 6,700 children and adults with special needs around Michigan next weekend. Donated gifts will arrive for sorting inside a Pentastar Aviation hangar at Oakland County International Airport (OCIA) between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, December 7. Volunteers will then load the gifts into about 260 airplanes for delivery to 29 airports around the state beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, December 8.
