To foster green thumbs during the off-season months, Oakland County Parks and Recreation leases 60 square foot indoor garden plots inthe Waterford Oaks Greenhouse.
In August 2011, 127 applicants submitted for a chance at one of 33 plots. To meet demands, 33 additional plots were constructed.
The fall/winter garden plot package (September 15, 2011-April 15, 2011) includes tested soil of compost and topsoil; controlled environment greenhouse with heat and light; use of dumpster, portable restrooms and basic tools, water; and education programs. Cost is $130/plot.
The lottery for 150 square foot spring/summer outdoor plot packages opens March 2012. Twent-five plots will be available. Check DestinationOakland.com for details in January 2012.
