Officials from Genesee, Shiawassee, Oakland and Lapeer counties among other government and business leaders will gather Thursday at Bishop International Airport as part of the first meeting for the Michigan Next Development Corporation board following aerotropolis designation by Gov. Rick Snyder.
Final approval of the application is still needed by the Michigan Strategic Fund. The 5 p.m. meeting at Bishop will include overview of the board’s formation and officer selection.
Burton Mayor Paula Zelenko said the recognition, already received by groups in Wayne County and the Lansing area, would bring the area other benefits for potential job growth.
“I think the biggest advantage being a part of this is the marketing we can do as a group to bring business to the area,” she said. “To bring that inter-modal trade here on this side of the border.”
Flint Township Supervisor Karyn Miller said with the governor doing away with renaissance zones, the aerotropolis designation will help businesses located near airports, railways and major freeways.
“It should be some exciting times,” said Zelenko.
