Ecotelligent Homes invites you to tour the anticipated LEED Platinum Matchbox House on Saturday October 27th from 2 to 6pm.
The stunning new home located at 2216 Hickman Road in Ann Arbor, MI was designed by the Bureau for Architecture and Urbansim’s Naseem Alizadeh and built by Green Building Services’ Brian Halprin. They turned to Ecotelligent Homes for its expertise in evaluating the energy efficiency of the building plans and conducting comprehensive home energy audits.
The team effort resulted in a home that is not only eye-catching, but also super efficient. After performing the blower door test during the final confirmation HERS (Home Energy Rating Systems) audit, Amanda Godward, owner of Ecotelligent Homes, summed the project up perfectly by saying, “This is the tightest home I’ve ever seen”. While the Matchbox House is certainly hip by anyone’s standards, she was not referring to its stylish looks, but to how few unwanted air leaks the home’s building envelope has. While the home’s building envelope is “tight”, it efficiently maintains good indoor air quality with an energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system that provides the required amount of fresh air to the home. With less than half the energy usage of other new homes, the Matchbox House achieved a HERS index rating of 49 which will qualify towards LEED points and help achieve the overall LEED Platinum designation.

About LEED
The LEED rating system, takes a summation of points earned in several environmentally responsible categories, i.e.– materials & resources(MR), water efficiency(WE), sustainable sites(SS), etc.– to give a home its rating. The rating scale is from 0-100, with an opportunity for 10 bonus points for innovation, making 110 the highest rating possible. It takes a rating of 80 or higher to be considered platinum. Accounting for 37 of the 100 points, energy and atmosphere (EA) is the most heavily weighted category, which is where Ecotelligent Homes comes in to play.
About Ecotelligent Homes
Ecotelligent Homes works with builders and architects to optimize the energy efficiency of their homes by reviewing building plans and performing various checks throughout the build phase to ensure quality of insulation and other home efficiency systems. Once the building is complete, Ecotelligent Homes conducts a Confirmation HERS energy audit using a blower door and thermal infrared camera and creates a detailed software model of the home. Using the modeling results, a HERS rating is issued to a home which is an energy efficiency score recognized by LEED and ENERGY STAR.
