The works of art of 24 women from around the country will be on exhibit at OCC’S annual women’s juried art exhibition.
“From Our Perspectives: A National Women’s Art Exhibition,” is September 18 – October 17, at the Smith Theatre Gallery at the Orchard Ridge Campus.
Sponsored by OCC’s Womencenter, program coordinator Arlene Frank says more than 700 women artists have shown their work at the exhibit for the approximately 25 years it has been in existence.
The public will have the opportunity to meet the artists at the show’s opening reception 7-9 p.m., Thursday, September 18, at the Wallace Smith Theater Gallery. The art exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, September 18-October 17, at the gallery.
This year’s artists are: Kayla Bennett of Pennsylvania, Jaclyn Bonzagni of Massachusetts, Maureen Costa of Arizona, Natsuko Hattori of New York, Water Kerner, Emily Maddigan, Monika Meler, Hanna Olivia Nelson, Monica Perez Vega, Cat Chiu Phillips, Zahava Sherez and Sydney Walters of California, Hanna Dozlowski-Slone of Kansas, Stacy Leeman of Ohio, Jane Michalski of Illinois, Rebecca Nolda of New Mexico, and Jan Brown, Aj Cooke, Crystal Hartman, Amy Kelly, Rosemary Lee, Tisch Mikhail Lewis, and Joan Painter Jones of Michigan. Slide shows of recent past years’ exhibits can be found here.
This year’s exhibit is juried by Mary Rousseaux, whose work is included in many private and corporate collections including Lincoln Motors and Aria Resort, and has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest and Midwest Homes, as well as in major motion pictures.
“I am so excited to have been selected as this year’s juror,” Rousseaux said. “The work was diverse and rich with content. The pieces I have selected for the exhibition reflect the ideas of relationships,” she said. “Being a mother, a wife, an educator and an artist, I have a broad understanding of the different types of relationships that we as women encounter throughout our lives.”
Most recently, her work was recognized at Art Prize where she was included in the top five for the Jurors’ Award. Rousseaux’s work has been exhibited in numerous select group shows, including Chicago Art Source, Scarab Club, Ann Arbor Art Center, Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Polk Competition, C Pop Gallery and Lawrence Street Gallery. Solo exhibitions include Momus, Gallery, Mosaic Productions, and University of Michigan. She has served as professional artist in residence at Vermont Studios and Ox Bow. She is currently the Director of Pontlevoy Creative Residencies, Director of the Professional Print Workshop at WSU, and Adjunct Faculty at Eastern Michigan University and Madonna University.
From Our Perspective showcases original works in a variety of media. Works of art are available for purchase and cash prizes are awarded for Best of Show, President’s Award, and Purchase Award.
This year’s exhibit features 24 artists with 26 works of art, in the form of photography, wood, acrylic and oil paintings, sculpture, porcelain, mixed media, and textiles.
“From Our Perspectives provides women artists a place to express their unique diversity and creativity as they continue to weave the tapestry of life,” Frank says. “Within their chosen medium, women artists share their unique viewpoint on the material, personal, global, political, and cultural landscapes that surround them.”
