Superhero Training Academy has a new Footquarters! We need your help to create it into a livable, professional, and explosive space. Our new location? 14925 Bramell, Detroit, 48223 in the Brightmoor neighborhood.
It all started in summer 2008, with some 1 to 4 year olds from the Heaven’s Angels Day Care Center. On a trip to a neighbor’s garden, the little ones ate a leaf and became full of excitement. Gwen Shivers was inspired, and with the help of their tender, squishy hands tucking seeds lovingly into the dirt, they built the “Edible Playscape” to educate, care for, and celebrate eating healthy and living playfully off the land.
Gwen has worked with kids and run a community daycare for 36 years and works with over 250 kids each summer. She hopes for everlasting relationships with kids, and teaching them how to be creative, self-sufficient, and community oriented. Her vision is to build a kids’ clubhouse in the home next to the Edible Playscape. This is where STA comes in: a partnership where we fix up the house as our Footquarters, offer programs, and support the day care with superhero shenanigans.
THE FOOTQUARTERS
Besides an office, gathering space, and community resource, Footquarters will house a team equal to the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-men all combined. Storming Sunflower, the Grateful Creative Lumberjack, and the Devoted SnuggleBuggle (border collie mix) join Laughing Moon in a stampede of hugs and fireworks, and the new Footquarters will be their home. Our intentions are to continue building a sense of village in the Brightmoor neighborhood and to serve the holistic development of youth in Brightmoor and beyond.
